What did we learn from the deadly limousine crash? What details we have? And can driverless cars solve the problem or not? Make these issues clear with us.
The horrific limousine crash which killed 20 people, 17 passengers, and 2 pedestrians, in Schoharie, New York was a tragic incident which left its mark. Can self-driving cars be a perfect antidote for the accident? It needs thorough discussion.
Will Driverless Cars Even Help in These Situations?
The National Transportation Safety Board didn’t make any report about the cause of the crash. Meanwhile, media reports offer that the limousine driver was going to fast and didn’t have proper licensing to drive that type of vehicle. What about the inspection checks, the 2001 Ford Excursion didn’t have the latest inspection for the vehicle. These are human errors. Which may be solved if driverless cars exist.
With the latest studies, we are told that robots and AI (Artifical Intelligence) will follow all the road laws, will handle the terrain and will also use some new safe-driving technology. If combine AI (computer technology) with the newest vehicle, we should have the best result, should we?
For example, limousines are not usually made by famous manufactures, but they need to comply with all the road safety standards. More than 10 people can seat in those vehicles, and some safety standards apply to each passenger. Limousines comply with the federal road standards but safety inside the car must be at the first place.
Most of these vehicles have sideways facing seats or have a seriously modified structural integrity. The modifier of this kind of vehicle should have self-certification that the limousine still complies with all type of safety and road standards. There is no such requirement to check the actions of the vehicle, in case of a new form. It’s no wonder that accidents like this happen with this reason mentioned-above.
And the same with the driverless cars, there are no special tests to check how the car will react to inputs provided by that computer. The results can be catastrophic. But can driverless cars solve the human life protecting problem?
