An HBO Max TV series, Hacks, is about a comedian of yore getting back into the rhythm of things while working with a young comedy writer to re-establish relevancy. As you can imagine for any contemporary TV Series, it takes place in modern-day Earth. Unlike most shows, Hacks establishes that there are electric vehicles all around. The Chevy Bolt, the Audi E-Tron and of course the Nissan Leaf. It’s something that the sound mixers, however, have not been able to make realistic. There happens to be an actress – who I myself have seen do stand-up and she’s very good – by the name of Hannah Einbinder. She’s the young comic that comes in to help her co-star become relevant. But while she’s taking care of that, her character and the others do a poor job of replicating the sounds of electric vehicles across the whole board.

Einbinder’s character takes some others through a drive-thru wedding chapel. But then there’s a Chevy Bolt EV where Ava parks the car and a screech of an engine roars. Yet, there’s no real likelihood of the Bolt being a gasoline engine like the others. However, there doesn’t happen to be a loud electric motor.

There is a character named Marcus who grabs an Audi E-Tron. But there is no real likelihood of the E-Tron being as loud as a gasoline powered SUV. So there has been an E-Tron where there could be lower speeds alerting pedestrians of presence. But it shouldn’t really sound like an engine of a car. Something more otherworldly really.

So it seems like people in Hollywood or wherever don’t get it when they hear electric vehicles. Because like in the song, Sweatpants by Childish Gambino, Fisker’s don’t make any noise. Do they?

HBO Max is streaming the first season of Hacks.
